“Ol’ Waylon” is an album by Waylon Jennings that was released on RCA in 1977. It eventually became one of Jennings’ highest-selling albums, due in no small part to the phenomenal success of the chart-topping “Luckenbach Texas.” The album remained at #1 on Billboard’s Top Country Albums chart for 13 weeks in 1977 (16 weeks on the Cash Box charts) and earned a Platinum record.
Overall, “Ol’ Waylon” is pretty enjoyable, but it winds up feeling a little hollow, as if Jennings was trying to give the audience what it wanted. There are enough good moments to make it worthwhile though, not just to the dedicated fan but more for some casual fan who is enamored of his outlaw years. Yet, it is still an album that gets by more on its style than it’s substance.
