Description
Performance (Soundtrack) features vocals by Mick Jagger, Randy Newman, Merry Clayton, Buffy Saint-Marie – including Ry Cooder on guitars and Bernie Krause on Moog symthsizers – for the eponymous film directed by Donald Cammell and Nicholas Roeg with music by Jack Nitzsche.
Performance was a dark, experimental film utilizing cross-cutting editorial techniques that emphasized the main character’s issues with an identity crisis which included graphic depictions of sex, drug use and violence.
Warner Bros. studio executives, who believed they were getting a Rolling Stones equivalent of the Beatles A Hard Day’s Night (1964), initially denied the film a cinematic release. Performance was finally released in 1970 after several recuts and changes and is now frequently cited as a classic of British cinema.
A single from the album, “Memo from Turner” sung by Mick Jagger (b/w the instrumental “Natural Magic”) was released in 1970 reaching #32 on theĀ UK singles chart.
