“Countdown: The Savoy Sessions” is a compilation album by jazz musicians John Coltrane and Wilbur Harden, two-LP set, originally recorded in 1958 .
It was issued on Savoy Records in 1978 as SJL 2203 and comprises all the pieces recorded on the March 13, 1958 session. Taken at a blinding fast tempo, “Countdown” was a perfect example of where John Coltrane and jazz itself were headed. With very little regard to the actual melody — which in itself is quite beautiful — Coltrane solos at a blinding pace during the verses, which, in fact, are the only sections of the actual song.
In addition to six competent but not overly original compositions by the fluegelhornist Wilbur Harden, there are three lengthy alternate takes.
