Description

Escalator Over the Hill (or EOTH) is mostly referred to as a jazz opera, but it was released as a “chronotransduction” with “words by Paul Haines, adaptation and music by Carla Bley, production and coordination by Michael Mantler, performed by the Jazz Composers Orchestra.

Received the “Jazz Album of the Year” award from Melody Maker magazine in 1972.  Rolling Stone Magazine called the album “an international musical encounter of the first order”. Marcello Carlin of Stylus Magazine praised the album as “the greatest record ever made.”

Side Six of the original LPs ended in a locked groove, the final track “…And It’s Again” continuing infinitely on manual record players.

Featuring Jack Bruce, Don Cherry, John McLaughlin, Gato Barbieri, Charlie Haden, Michael Mantler, Paul Motian, Don Preston, Linda Ronstadt and John Paul Jones.

Includes 12 page Libretto/Photo booklet. Original Release. Original Label. 3 LP Boxed Set. JCOA 3LP-EOTH 1971 *****

Note: If you have an opportunity to travel to Perugia, Italy – where a Jazz Festival is held every Summer, you will see what may be interpreted as an inspiration for the title: escalators that take you over the hill.
