“Cookin’ At The Plugged Nickel” <\/strong><\/em>is taken from The Miles Davis Quintet’s<\/strong> legendary stay at the Plugged Nickel in Chicago. This recording \u00a0finds the young group (comprised of Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter<\/strong>, and Tony Williams<\/strong>) stretching out on “If I<\/em> Were a Bell”,<\/em> “Stella by Starlight”,<\/em> “Walkin”<\/em> and “Milestones”<\/em>, and whipping through the melodies quickly and then really tearing into the chord changes \u00e0 la Ornette Coleman<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Rarely again would Miles Davis<\/strong>\u00a0be captured on record playing standards, the emphasis was shifting to continuous medleys full of original material.<\/p>\n

There were three versions<\/strong> of the December 1965 Plugged Nickel<\/em> sessions.\u00a0The first, a double LP entitled “Live At The Plugged Nickel”<\/em><\/strong>, initially released in 1976 in Japan and released in the U.S. in 1982.<\/p>\n

The second version, featuring the songs “If I Were A Bell”<\/em>, “Stella By Starlight”<\/em>, “Walkin”<\/em>, and “Miles”<\/em> (Milestones) was a single LP entitled “Cookin’ At The Plugged Nickel<\/em><\/strong>” released in 1987 (cited here) as part of the Columbia Jazz Masterpieces series.<\/p>\n

The third release is the 8 CD boxed set “The Complete Live At The Plugged Nickel”,<\/em><\/strong> currently out of print.<\/p>\n
