“The Layla Sessions – 20th Anniversary Edition”<\/strong> (or The Layla Sessions) released September 1999 is an anniversary edition reissue of the “Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs”<\/em> album by Derek and the Dominos<\/strong>, who disbanded in 1971.<\/p>\n

Derek and the Dominos<\/b>\u00a0were a\u00a0blues rock<\/a>\u00a0band formed in the spring of 1970 by guitarist and singer\u00a0Eric Clapton<\/a>, keyboardist and singer\u00a0Bobby Whitlock<\/a>, bassist\u00a0Carl Radle<\/a>\u00a0and drummer\u00a0Jim Gordon<\/a>. All four members had previously played together in\u00a0Delaney & Bonnie and Friends<\/a>, during and after Clapton’s brief tenure with\u00a0Blind Faith<\/a>.\u00a0Dave Mason<\/a>\u00a0supplied additional lead guitar on early studio sessions and played at their first live gig. Another participant at their first session as a band was\u00a0George Harrison<\/a>, the recording for whose album\u00a0All Things Must Pass<\/a><\/i>\u00a0marked the formation of Derek and the Dominos.<\/p>\n

The band released only one studio album,\u00a0Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs<\/a><\/i>, produced by\u00a0Tom Dowd<\/a>, which also featured notable contributions on\u00a0slide guitar<\/a>\u00a0from\u00a0Duane Allman<\/a>. A double album, “Layla”\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>went on to receive critical acclaim, but initially faltered in sales and in radio airplay.<\/p>\n

Although released in 1970 it was not until March 1972 that the album’s single “Layla<\/a>“<\/em> (a tale of\u00a0unrequited love<\/a>\u00a0inspired by Clapton’s relationship with his friend Harrison’s wife,\u00a0Pattie Boyd<\/a>) made the top ten in both the United States and the United Kingdom. The album is often considered to be the defining achievement of Eric Clapton’s career.<\/sup><\/p>\n
