“Zoot Allures”<\/strong> is an\u00a0album by Frank Zappa<\/strong>, originally conceptualized as a double LP, but subsequently shortened to a single album and released in 1976. \u00a0The title is a pun on the French expression “Zut Alors”<\/em><\/strong>, which conveys mild surprise.<\/p>\n

Zappa played a test pressing of the original album for Circus\u00a0Magazine<\/strong> in 1976, which reported a radically different, though slightly erroneous track listing that included “Sleep Dirt”, “The Ocean Is the Ultimate Solution”, “Filthy Habits”, and “Night of the Iron Sausage”.<\/p>\n

The former three tracks eventually surfaced on the 1979 LP\u00a0Sleep<\/strong> Dirt<\/strong><\/i>\u00a0and the posthumous LP\u00a0Lather<\/strong><\/i>. “Night of the Iron Sausage”<\/strong><\/em> remains unreleased, but was seemingly intended to be a guitar solo of fair length. “Wind Up Working’ In A Gas Station”<\/strong><\/em> and “Zoot Allures”<\/strong><\/em> were absent from test pressings.<\/p>\n

Zappa recorded the album after completing a world tour with a band including Napoleon Murphy Brock<\/strong> on Tenor Sax and Vocals, Andre Lewis<\/strong> on Keyboards, Roy Estrada<\/strong> on Bass and Terry Bozzio<\/strong> on Drums. However, this band appeared only on the live track “Black Napkins”<\/strong><\/em> with only Bozzio retained to play on the sessions, although Lewis and Estrada contributed backing vocals.<\/p>\n

By the time\u00a0Zoot Allures<\/i><\/strong>\u00a0was finished, Zappa had begun forming a new live band, including Bozzio, Patrick<\/strong> O’Hearn<\/strong> and Eddie Jobson<\/strong>, who were pictured on the cover with Zappa, although the latter two did not perform on the album.<\/p>\n

After Zappa’s death, one of the band’s 1976 concerts was released as FZ : OZ<\/strong>.<\/i><\/p>\n
