“‘Kulu Se’ Mama” is an album by John Coltrane featuring the title track composed by Juno Lewis, a singer and percussionist who brought a strongly African element into the expanding band.
The remainder of the disc gathers tracks from various sessions recorded by the Classic Quartet at Rudy Van Gelder’s Englewood Cliffs enclave. “Kulu Se’ Mama” is the continuation of John Coltrane’s quest for musical expression.
The title track is essentially based on a concept and lyrics by Juno Lewis, over which Coltrane and an extended band (including Pharoah Sanders, Donald Garrett, Frank Butler, Joe Brazil and Lewis himself in addition to Coltrane’s quartet) plays some semi-tribal music.
